altarflame asked: I think that in this storm, talking about NY above Cuba, Haiti and the Dominicans is not equal to flag waving or thinking with borders - those countries get hit with hurricanes a few times a year, even more than us, and what has captured the media about NY now is that they have never been and were totally unprepared with unique, non-tropical, CRAZY circumstances (freezing without power, unprecedented population density for chaos, multi-story buildings falling, flooded subway stations).
And the US has a lot of damn money to rebuild and get back to normal, whereas these other countries probably won’t. Even years after the Haiti earthquake there’s still something like over 300’000 people living in the temporary shelters that were set up. That’s the problem. :-/
